“Applicants are accomplished in and out the classroom, and diverse in their backgrounds, talents and perspectives. Many have distinguished themselves in the arts, in academic research, in leadership roles and in service to their communities. We know the ywill add to the intellectual and social environment that makes Princeton the very special place that it is.”

—— Janet Lavin Rapelye, Dean of Admission at Princeton

—— Janet Lavin Rapelye,

“While we value objective criteria, we apply a more expansive view of excellence. Test scores and grades offer some indication of students’ academic promise and achievement. But we also scrutinize applications for extracurricular distinction and personal qualities. Students’ intellectual imagination, strength of character, and their ability to exercise good judgment – these are critical factors in the admissions process, and they are revealed not by test scores but by students’ activities outside the classroom, the testimony of teachers and guidance consultant, and by alumni/ae and staff interview reports.”

—— Williams R. Fitzsimmons, Former Dean of Admission at Harvard

—— Williams R. Fitzsimmons,

“Weaker transcripts face tough sledding in a highly selective college environment. They don’t automatically disqualify a candidate for us, but you have to remember that we have many thousands of applicants with extremely strong transcripts who are also just as exemplary in the other ways that count.”

—— Jeff Brenzel, Dean of Undergraduate Admission at Yale University

—— Jeff Brenzel,

"Now we find the situation in which applying to certain colleges is a ‘crapshoot’ for most students since the odds of admission are ridiculously low. The best course, rather than relying on college rankings and putting students (and parents) through a self-imposed wringer, is the old-fashioned method of doing your research, visiting campuses and finding the best fit you can where your academic goals can be met."

—— Dean of Columbia Admissions

“The 21st Century is one of entrepreneurship and innovation. There will not be fixed careers…When you talk to employers, they aren’t really focused on skills that can easily be taught, and might be outdated in five years. They want people with critical thinking skills, people who can work in diverse teams and solves problems.”

—— Rebecca Chopp, Former President of Swarthmore College

—— Rebecca Chopp,

“Boarding Schools are looking for students who can articulate why particular tradition, sports, extracurricular activities or community events best fit for their profile. We are always asking ourselves, ‘would I want to live in a dorm with this student?”

—— Dana Brown, Senior Associate Direction at Admission of Hotchkiss School

—— Dana Brown,
